Below is a listing of all of our K-12 and adult classes and workshops. Some arts workshops are just one day, most are two or three days. All of our music workshops are 12 week long sessions, but if you come in mid-session, we may be able to accommodate a shorter version.

Art Grants: Workshops for Individuals and Organizations
If you are an artist or part of a small art organization that is looking to jumpstart or refresh an approach to grantseeking, these workshops are for you!
Art grants in King County and in WA State as a whole are changing rapidly, due to the advent of Doors Open, the Creative District program, and the changing post-pandemic philanthropic landscape, including widespread funding cuts at the federal level.
At Happy Time, you can learn with Ali Marcus, who has coached and trained grantwriters for 12 years, and taught workshops across the state. She brings deep experience working in all manner of fundraising and strategic planning, facilitating board discussions and retreats, as well as serving on boards.
Moreover, she is a serial small business entrepreneur and lifelong professional artist who has lived and breathed your experience as a creative person who has stumbled into the world of fundraising, nonprofits, business, and administration out of necessity. She knows - you can learn how to thrive here!
Sign up for workshops a la carte, or choose the discounted option for the whole series of four workshops. As with all Happy Time workshops, these groups are kept small and designed to foster personal connections among the attendees. All workshops are in person only.
Each workshop meets on a Thursday from 1:00-2:30pm. The first 15 minutes are meet-and-greet, and the workshop is 75 minutes long.

June 5 - Art Grants: Prospects and Plans (no longer available)
In the sea of possibility, how do you focus in on the right opportunities? One of the biggest time crushers in grantwriting is spending hours on a grant proposal for an opportunity that was never a good fit for your needs. Learn how to find and qualify prospects, and what types of approaches help you make the most of your very limited time.
June 12 - Art Grants: Strong Goals and Case for Support
There are fundamental building blocks that grantmakers look for when they decide what merits funding, and surprisingly little of it has to do with the artistic process or the creative spark. Explore what makes a strong case for support and how your project or program can build one.
June 19 - Art Grants: Budgets
The way you envision and share financial information is a core piece of the puzzle. In this workshop you will learn about different types of budgets and how to build a budget that highlights your work in a clear and easy to digest format.
June 26 - Art Grants: Long Term Success
Securing funding for one project, as artists often do, is often much simpler than looking at the bigger picture. In this workshop, you will learn about some keys to long term success in grantseeking, such as strong outcomes, diversified funding sources, and the role that relationship building plays in your ecosystem.
Origami 101 (June 20)
Paper is a versatile art form, with so many ways to create beauty, intrigue, and pure fun.
In this beginner class we will explore the basics of Origami while also learning the foundations for some more advanced projects. You will learn and take home at least two projects that can be easily replicated at home.
For anyone looking to expand their creative knowledge or just try something new in a fun, small group setting, this class is for you.
Taught by local artist and poet Dani Flanary, this workshop meets from 10:00am-12:00pm on June 20, and is open to adults of any skill level, and open to children as long as an adult caregiver is also signed up for the class. All materials provided by Happy Time.

Mindful Art Making: SUMMER (Jun 27)
Ready to tap into your creativity in a welcoming and uplifting space?
Join us for a relaxing 2-hour workshop where we’ll explore personal symbols and create a meaningful mixed media piece. As we make art, we’ll celebrate the energy of spring with mindfulness, journaling, and reflection around the theme of “nurture.”
What does nurture look like in your life? What does "nurture" mean to you?
You’ll leave not just with a meaningful piece of art, but also with inspiration to continue your own creative self-care journey and a deeper connection to yourself.

Whimsy! (July 12)
What’s bringing you joy these days?
In this 2-hour mixed media workshop, we will explore the meaning of "whimsy" - in painting, writing, drawing, and sculpture. Take the opportunity to unleash the whimsical within you, as a release from the pressures of our world right now.
We will explore Doctor Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and other artists and writers who lead the way in seeking the playful, the unusual, the comical, the imaginative, and the utterly unserious.
Taught by teaching artist Susan Bradford, this class meets on July 12, from 2-4pm, and is open to adults only. No experience necessary. All supplies and materials provided by Happy Time Studio.

MUSIC & ART SUMMER CAMP!
We are thrilled to expand our partnership with the City of Issaquah by offering summer camp on the grounds of the Issaquah Community Center!
This helps us double the number of camps we can offer, providing more variety for arts immersion, and more space to accommodate more campers for more creative fun!
If your child is someone who simply can’t get enough of making things, writing things, and creating in general, this is a one-of-a-kind experience to help them on their artistic path.
There will only be one session of camp, running July 14 through July 25 (yes, it’s two weeks long)
Families can choose half day or full day options, including lunchtime as an optional add on.
Guitar - Fall Session (Sep-Dec)
Guitar workshops are collaborative group experiences where you will learn technical skills as well as the pleasure of musical collaboration and peer learning.
You will learn to pick up your instrument and play a melody, strum songs and maybe sing along if that’s something you like to do. Your peers will be there to support you every step of the way!
We make sure you know how to tune and maintain the instrument, and that you gain knowledge of music theory, tab notation, chord charts, and more, to help you figure out where you’d like to take your practice next. For some people, a songwriting workshop is the natural next step.
Workshops are tailored to three age groups: elementary, teen, and adult. We can further specify groupings based on scheduling availability, if possible.

Songwriting - Fall Session (Sep-Dec)
Songwriting workshops have a dual focus on inward reflection and collaborative peer learning. Together we will build the muscles we need to be patient, kind, and confident with ourselves, as well as supportive and inspired by one another.
You will have the opportunity to work solo as well as collaborate, and develop long-term peer relationships around a shared interest and inspiration. We will study well known and not-so-well known songs, learn techniques for expressing ideas and emotions through music and words, and build a repertoire unique to your understanding of the world. You may also learn to see things in new ways, thanks to your peers!
Workshops are tailored to three age groups: elementary, teen, and adult. We can further specify groupings based on scheduling availability, if possible.

This spring is your chance to learn how to crochet! Students will learn several basic stitches, how to turn around, and how to work in both straight and round forms. Scarves, hats, and washcloths, here we come!
Join teacher Amy Kramer Hawks, who has a BA in Vocal Performance and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Design and Instruction. She works as an educator in Seattle Public Schools and at the Seattle Aquarium as a Marine Interpreter.

A fun, easygoing introduction to the basics of this beautiful art form. Students will learn about various techniques, such as (wet on wet, wet on dry, and resist), and will explore the complexities of color theory in an age appropriate way. Learning to work in watercolor helps boost artistic and creative skills for life!
Join teacher Nikki Mason, who has a Master’s in Art Administration and serves as a longtime art docent in the Issaquah School District. She enjoys working in many art mediums including acrylic paint, watercolor, pen and ink, mixed media, printmaking, bookmaking, as well as paper and fiber arts.
This class meets from 11:00am to 11:50am on April 26, May 3, and May 10, and is open to kids ages 7-10.

Let Them Speak! - Character Dialogue Workshop (Mar 23)
“Let Them Speak” — Using Dialogue to Bring Fictional Characters to Life
Every single person has their own special voice. Our speech has varying tones and rhythms. Our language use is shaped by our background, origins, and surroundings. Like people, characters display a variety of looks, behaviors, emotions, and speech patterns. Giving our characters a unique voice brings them to life. This workshop uses fun, engaging readings and exercises to delve into the essence of our characters’ dialogue.
This workshop will meet from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on March 23, 2025.

Linocut 101 Workshop (March 21 & 28)
Join us for a two day workshop in March to explore the world of linocut! Colors, layers, shapes, carving, pressing, and more! Pull back your paper to a delightful surprise every time you come in.
Taught by local printmaker William Cook, this workshop meets from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on March 21 & 28, and is open to adults of any skill level. All materials provided by Happy Time.
No experience is necessary. Students who have already taken Linocut 101 are welcome to return to explore more with soft cut linoleum under the guidance of a teaching artist!

Explore the beautiful world of handmade books! Students will design and decorate their own canvas covers using paints, markers, stamps, and stencils. They will then create the book sections (signatures) with their preferred paper stock, and hand sew them into their canvas covers.
This class is a fun exploration of color and experimentation with various painting techniques for artists of all levels. Everyone will go home with their own unique creative masterpiece!

To honor the season of winter, we will explore the theme of “letting be” as we create a mixed media painting in a supportive, small group environment. What does it really look like to let something be? How can you cultivate more acceptance into your life? You will leave with a piece of artwork to take home as well as plenty of tips to continue a mindful art practice on your own.

Still Life Collage Workshop
Collage is one of the most expressive ways to explore the beauty of a still life. In this workshop, you will create at least two still life paper collages using a variety of approaches. This is an opportunity to take a few hours to look deeply and explore beauty by experimenting with color, shape, composition, and texture.
Your instructor, Karen Hirsch, is an experienced collage artist and a true expert in facilitation.

Treat yourself to an afternoon of collage, one of the most expressive and accessible ways to express yourself. Use the everyday materials of scissors, glue and a wide variety of papers to express your imagination and creativity. She will show you how to find and follow your own instincts down paths you may not even know are there.

Monotype 101 Workshop (Feb 8)
Experience the spontaneity of monotype printing! Unlike other forms of printmaking, with monotypes, you apply ink directly to a plexiglass plate and hand press the image onto paper. This is a fascinating approach to printmaking that uses the skills you may be familiar with from linocut or woodcut, and teaches you a new perspective.
With monotypes, you only make one print, and can never replicate it in quite the same way again. Ephemeral beauty.

Tales of Thresholds (Storytelling)
Tales of Thresholds is a ritual story-circle that re-imagines the way we cultivate and sustain a nourished community through storytelling.
This ritual experience embraces individual past lived experiences; and honors them as arbitrary to re:entering the community to re:shape our present and re:imagine our future as a community.
The collective is invited into thoughtfully designed thresholds to individually experience the liminality of that space. The visceral moments created within this space paves way for storytelling.
Taught by Divya Rajan, Tales of Thresholds meets from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on February 1, and is open to adults only.
Paper Art 101 for Kids (Jan-Feb)
Paper is a versatile art form, with so many ways to create beauty, intrigue, and pure fun.
In this beginner class we will go over the basics of paper crafting and folding. From origami to decoupage, kids will try their hand at multiple styles and techniques. This three week series is a perfect fit or any kids who love to make things with their hands, new creative inspiration, and hanging out in groups making art.

Flash Fiction Workshop
This workshop will meet from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on January 11, 2025.
Make a flash! Learn the art of telling a story in 500 words or less.
Flash fiction is a unique and powerful genre that is widely popular in printed and online literary magazines. Through the process of exploring examples, playing with writing prompts and exercises, and examining the art of editing, we will build our own flash fiction piece. All writing levels are welcome!

Linocut Holiday Cards (December 13)

Taught by local printmaker William Cook, this workshop meets from 5:00pm - 8:00pm on December 13, and is open to adults of any skill level. All materials provided by Happy Time.

Hand Sewing 102 (Grades 1-3)
Do you know how to sew?! Creativity meets skill-building by learning to sew…this class is designed to enhance fine motor skills and focused concentration through the art of hand-sewing.
Taught by Susan Walker, this class meets from 5:00pm - 6:15pm on October 14, 21, and 28, and is open to kids in grades 1-3.
All supplies are included, no experience necessary. It is helpful to have taken Hand Sewing 101, but not required.
We will review the basics from Hand Sewing 101, and dive deeper into projects. Choices include:
· making a stuffy from a pattern;
· using fabric markers to design, draw, trace, and sew a stuffy;
· make a wallet
· make a pouch, purse or pocket
To support the creative endeavors, we provide a fabric ‘library’ filled with a variety of materials to choose from. Each student receives a sewing kit equipped with all the necessary tools. Safety is a priority, so we cover tips on the proper use of needles and scissors.
Happy Time Studio features small group instruction to ensure every student has success exploring their creativity with confidence!

Drawing White on Black Workshop

This drawing workshop meets from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on September 9, and is open to artists of any skill level. No experience is necessary. All materials provided by Happy Time.
Summer Camp (Session Two)
This camp is for ages 8-12, though teens are welcome, so please inquire if you have a teen who is interested and we may be able to customize!
Morning Music Camp (9:30am - 11:45am) - Learn to play guitar and write songs from the Beatles’ music!
Lunch (11:45am - 1:15pm) - Weather permitting, we will take kids to the park for lunch time
Afternoon Visual Art Camp (1:15pm - 3:30pm) - Explore key elements of visual art through printmaking!
